old corner shop...

which is sadly being pulled down as i type...i see beautiful old wooden buildings disappear all the time, to be replaced with new plastic looking unsightly apartments.... why does progress have to be so ugly...?

You are right! The same things happen also in China: no revalutation of the past in this sense. It is such a pity that much of the past is being destroyed in the name of "progress".
Luckily here in Italy we tend to restorate our historical buildings/houses, even if they are small.
I live in the historical centre of a small town on Lake Maggiore, where all houses (the earliest date back to the 14th century) have found their original shapes and colours.

Hi - just found your blog while browsing for pics of Yamagata... A view across the fields to Yamagata looked familiar - from Hitoshi Konno's house?! Are you Mrs Hitoshi??? We haven't seen him for ages - so if so please say hi from Will and Chika in England! He came to our wedding in Nagai and J's in 1999. Hope to meet up next time in Japan, all the best, Will and Chika.
