mountain vegetables...

there is always plenty of choice of what to buy in the super market! most of these come from the mountains in this area...lots of interesting flavours....you certainly don't get bored with food.....

My oba-chan used to pick the weeds out of the back yard and throw them into the soup. She also made her own tofu and miso paste from scratch, believe it or not, along with oshinko. There was always dried moldy fish hanging along the kitchen walls with which to make her own dashi, also.

The first photo looks like a vegetable called "fiddleheads" which is sold in farmer's markets here. They are available only for about two weeks every year and this is their season. They are wonderful just steamed and eaten with rice.

The second photo? I've never seen anything like it before.

The second photo looks like fresh wasabi or horseradish.

Great photo of the veggies.

the second photo is a mountain vegetable called udo...no idea what this is in english, very tasty in a soup, but couldn't exactly explain the flavour, a bit like burdock root perhaps ....wasabi is more nobbly!
